Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It? When to Book One (and When to Skip It)

If you've ever looked at an all-inclusive resort price tag and thought, "Is this really worth it?"—you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions I get as a travel advisor. The short answer? Sometimes.

The longer answer? It depends on how you travel, what you want, and what’s included.

Let’s break it down.

What Is an All-Inclusive Resort, Really?

At its core, “all-inclusive” means your room, food, drinks, entertainment, and sometimes activities are included in one upfront price. But every resort defines “all” a little differently. At places like Sandals or Beaches, almost everything is included: top-shelf liquor, gourmet dining, airport transfers, water sports—even scuba diving. But other resorts may charge extra for things like premium dining, room service, Wi-Fi, or beach loungers. That’s why reading the fine print (or working with someone who already knows it) is key.

When All-Inclusive Resorts Are 100% Worth It

1. You Want to Relax, Not Plan

If you don’t want to think about budgeting every meal or researching local restaurants, an all-inclusive makes life easy. You show up. You eat. You drink. You relax.

2. You're Traveling as a Couple or Group

It’s hard to beat the simplicity of one price that covers it all—especially when you're splitting costs, planning a honeymoon, or organizing a multi-gen trip.

3. You Like Unlimited Food & Drinks

Even moderate drinkers and snackers can get their money’s worth. Fancy a mimosa at breakfast? Go for it. Want to try three desserts? Nobody's judging.

4. You're Headed to a Destination Where Going Off-Property Isn’t Ideal

In some areas (especially more remote or less walkable spots), the resort is the main attraction. Having everything onsite just makes sense.

5. You're Celebrating Something Special

Honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays—there’s nothing quite like being spoiled in paradise. Bonus: many resorts offer free honeymoon perks.

When an All-Inclusive Might Not Be the Best Fit

  • You're a foodie who wants to explore local restaurants.

  • You're planning to be off-property most of the time (tours, sightseeing, etc.).

  • You don’t drink alcohol, and food isn’t a big deal to you.

  • You’re on a super tight budget and just want a place to sleep.

In those cases, a boutique hotel or condo rental might give you more bang for your buck.

Final Verdict

All-inclusive resorts are worth it when you want convenience, predictability, and a worry-free vacation experience. You're not just paying for food and drink—you’re paying for ease. No math. No decisions. No stress. But if you’re the type who wants to dive deep into the local scene and try something new every night, you might be better off booking à la carte.
